Ripon Theatre Festival puts local sponsorship centre stage
Business support is crucial to the ongoing success of Ripon Theatre Festival – and to the wider health of the cultural landscape – as organisers highlight the role of sponsors and local partners in keeping the show on the road.
The festival operates as a charity, powered by volunteers and supported by a mix of corporate sponsorship, donations, grants and public funding. Ticket income accounts for less than a third of the revenue required each year, making external backing not just valuable, but essential.
That support is helping drive significant growth. In 2025, the festival attracted nearly 8,000 attendances – a 37% increase on the previous year – reinforcing its growing impact on the local economy.
In Ripon, that backing is both broad and deeply rooted in the local business community.
Through three sponsorship tiers – Red Carpet, Leading Lights and Theatre Props – businesses support the festival in ways that go far beyond traditional sponsorship. Some fund performances or headline events, while others contribute time, expertise and practical support.
And that has a clear economic impact.
This kind of partnership has long been part of the fabric of the UK’s cultural sector. Festivals such as the Theakstons Old Peculier Crime Writing Festival and the Northern Aldborough Festival are similarly underpinned by a mix of business and public support.
In Ripon, it is that same collaboration – between business, culture and community – that continues to drive the festival forward.
Support ranges from small local venues like The Portly Pig, which host pop-up events, to larger sponsors including Elstob Auctioneers, who sponsor an open-air event each year. Longstanding supporters such as Specsavers and Little Bird Markets continue to back the festival, alongside many other committed local businesses.
David Elstob, Director of Elstob Auctioneers, who has supported the festival from its very start, said:
Alongside supporting a high-profile cultural event, sponsors benefit from brand visibility, PR opportunities and hospitality, while aligning themselves with a festival that plays a growing role in shaping Ripon’s identity and appeal.
But at its heart, the message is simple.
Without business support, there would be no show.
